From the intimate salons of Paris to the wild jazz clubs of New York, from Vienna’s cozy coffee houses to Moscow’s lavish palaces and London’s rowdy music halls, discover the stories behind the compositions and learn about their creators: how they were shaped by their times and how they continue to inspire us today. The series will feature solo piano performances as well as appearances by opera singers and instrumentalists with music by Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Porter, Bernstein and many more.
Part Two: Vienna “Waltzing into the Abyss”
How did Mozart, hailed as the greatest musical genius of all time and the darling of the aristocracy, end up dying in poverty and buried in an unmarked grave? Why did Schubert struggle to earn a living, yet his music came to define Romanticism? How did a “forbidden dance,” once condemned as scandalous and vulgar, become the most cherished symbol of an Imperial capital?
For centuries, Vienna has been the grand stage where musical traditions were perfected, shattered, and reborn—where composers were crowned as gods or cast aside as lunatics. Join internationally acclaimed pianist and storyteller Pavel Timofeyevsky as he delves into the tale of a city that seduced, inspired, and tormented the greatest talents in music history.
Through dazzling piano performances and irreverent storytelling, discover Haydn’s wit, Mozart’s elegance and Beethoven’s rage. Learn about Brahms’ tortured perfectionism, be intoxicated by Strauss’ waltzes and moved by Mahler’s longing and witness how Vienna’s ever-changing musical landscape mirrored its turbulent and fascinating history.
