The Antique Dealer in Fact and Fiction

Many of us know the character Lovejoy, a perhaps less-than-reputable antique dealer lovingly brought to life for years on our TV screens by Ian McShane. Authors from Dickens to Ruth Rendell have woven tales in which antique experts played a part. And so we invite you to listen to Mark Westgarth, an author and professor, as he delivers a lighthearted talk about the role of the antique dealer in fact and fiction. Founder of the Centre for the Study of the Art and Antiques Market in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Leeds, Professor Westgarth was guest curator of the recent exhibition “Sold! The Great British Antiques Story” at the Bowes Museum in County Durham. He is fascinated by the antique dealer as a character and I am sure will persuade us of the allure of the antiquarian.
