President's Letter September/October 2017

Friday 08 September

As we start another kcwc year, it is time to celebrate our Club and Members. I still remember the time when I joined kcwc and I was so excited to see all the wonderful Activities and Events to attend. Beyond that, the friends I have made and ladies I have the privilege to meet have made my membership a rewarding experience. The many interesting stories and nationalities from all over the world are what makes our Club so special!

Volunteering for this wonderful organization has also been personally rewarding because it gives me the opportunity to give back to the Club I love. I am very proud to be part of the administration of kcwc and to work along so many talented ladies. With that in mind, I would like to thank all volunteers who are helping take our Club to the next level. Thank you to the Board 2017–2018, all Activity Leaders and all volunteers. You make a big difference, helping our Club thrive and making our Members happy to enjoy all kcwc has to offer. If you are interested in joining our team, please don’t hesitate to contact me at

To celebrate the start of our year, on 21 September at the Royal Geographical Society, we welcome a fantastic speaker: Dr. David Hamilton. Having worked as scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, developing drugs for cardiovascular disease and cancer, David was fascinated by the placebo effect and began to study mind-body interactions in his spare time. In his talk, he will discuss the impact of five side effects of kindness on one’s mental and physical health; including the impact on arteries, immune system, skin, and the nervous system; how kindness can be the secret ingredient to successful relationships; and even how kindness is contagious. A regular contributor to the Huffington Post, his latest project is a collaboration with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation to spread the word on the health benefits of being kind.

On 12 October we go for the first time to a new venue for our General Meetings: BAFTA, home of the British Film and Television Industry. Our speaker will be multi-award winning CNN International Correspondent Clarissa Ward. For more than a decade Ward has reported from front lines across the world from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen to Georgia and Ukraine. She has distinguished herself with her undercover reporting from Syria, interviewing opposition activists, members of the Free Syrian Army and ordinary Syrians caught in the crossfire. Having worked for CBS News, including ’60 Minutes’, she was the only Western journalist to have interviewed an American jihadist fighter inside Syria since the start of the civil war. Her impressive career has earned her several awards and continues to inspire female journalists around the world.

I hope you are as excited as I am to start enjoying the new kcwc year. See you soon!

Best wishes,

Catia Dal Poz
