SEPTEMBER 2017 GENERAL MEETING

GUEST SPEAKER: DR. DAVID HAMILTON

THE FIVE SIDE-EFFECTS OF KINDNESS

THURSDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2017

09:30am -  12:30pm

The Royal Geographical Society

1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR

(Closest tube: South Kensington or High Street Kensington)

After completing his PhD, Dr. David Hamilton worked as a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry for four years, developing drugs for cardiovascular disease and cancer. During this time he was also an athletics coach and team manager of one of the UK's largest athletics clubs. Inspired by the placebo effect, David resigned from the pharmaceutical industry to research, write and teach about the mind-body interactions and how the power of the mind and emotions impact health.

David will speak on his latest book, The Five Side Effects of Kindness, showing how being helpful is mentally, emotionally and physically healthy. Science shows that the feelings of warmth and connection through being kind have a powerful impact on the heart, immune system and the ageing process in an opposite way to how feeling stress can have harmful effects. David will discuss how the five side effects of kindness affect one’s health; how being kind impacts mental and emotional health; how it affects physical health, including the arteries, immune system, skin, nervous system; how it can be the secret ingredient to successful relationships; and even how kindness is contagious.

David is now a bestselling author of nine books. His work fuses neuroscience and the mind-body connection. He writes regular blogs for the Huffington Post and Psychologies Life Labs. He has also been featured in numerous publications, including ELLE, RED Magazine, Psychologies, YOU Magazine, Good Housekeeping, and several newspapers. David’s latest project is a collaboration with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way charity, having written an article on kindness for the organisation. Led by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, Born This Way Foundation was founded in 2012 with the goal of creating a kinder and braver world.
