Este and Gonzaga Patronage – Part 2

19 March, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

The Este family in Ferrara, the Gonzaga family in Mantua: two dynasties related by marriage, competing throughout the Renaissance to show their magnificence through their art collections and palaces. Isabella d’Este, sister of Alfonso d’Este, married the Marquess of Mantua, and corresponded with many of the great names of Renaissance art in the pursuit of creating her collection. Across two lectures we will see what this competitive patronage produced – from the sequence of paintings by Titian for Alfonso d’Este’s private gallery to the glorious Triumphs of Mantegna, done for the Marquess of Gonzaga, now in the Royal Collection in London. We welcome back Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe for these two lectures.  Please come to one or both as your schedule allows.  The doors open at 9:30 for coffee and tea, we aim to have a break around 11 and finish by 12:15.
