Now an affluent suburb, this is the legacy of an early-twentieth century initiative of mutual co-operation inspired by social reformer Henrietta Barnett with both an ‘Artisan’s Quarter’ and larger houses for the wealthy. Lutyens and Unwin, eminent architects, designed ‘productive but pleasurable’ workers’ dwellings and the community were provided with churches, schools, a theatre, village greens and a vast public garden of protected heath and woodland, all of which remain today.
