Pompeii has been in the news recently because of spectacular new excavations in the ancient Roman seaside city. In this lecture, David Bellamy – who has previously guided us around the life and times of Nero as well as the ancient stories of the Odyssey and the Iliad – will look at what we can learn about ancient life and art from the rich archaeological remains of both Pompeii and its quieter sister town Herculaneum. Interior decoration often includes frescoes with scenes of everyday life whilst mythological paintings inform us of religious and cultural belief systems. There is also a surprising amount of evidence of ancient gardens, whilst the public buildings allow us to reflect on their love of theatre, gladiatorial games and relaxation in the baths after a workout in the gym.
