Join us for a day trip to East Sussex. We will visit Great Dixter, one of the great gardens of England and formerly home to the gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, who created this atmospheric, daring and immersive garden and made it into a hub of ideas that spread through the world. This gardens has a very long flowering season because of its careful planning.
The house is 15th Century and was restored by Sir Edmund Luytens. It can be visited.
We will then travel to Rye, one of the prettiest medieval small towns in England, originally a Cinque Port. There are cobbled streets, half timbered houses and secret passages that regularly attract film crews in search of historical film settings. Rye has the best preserved medieval town centre in England and a vibrant art scene.
After cream tea/lunch in one of the pretty tea rooms there, we will explore Rye on foot, leaving from the tower of St. Mary’s Church. Afterwards we can visit the Georgian Lamb House with its lovely walled garden, where the American author Henry James lived, if we have enough energy left.
Travel: (1 hr 10 mins) will be by train from Charing Cross at 9:45 am (around £50 return if booked as group. Attendees will be contacted after registering to confirm the price for the return train fare.)
