Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe will explore 17th Century Dutch and Flemish Painting in a series of two lectures, concluding in Week 3 with a visit to The Wallace Collection.
Week 1 will concentrate on PEOPLE, looking firstly at Flanders and focusing on Rubens’ portraiture in the church and at court, and then at Holland and focusing on Rembrandt’s portraiture of merchants and society generally.
Week 2 will look at OBJECTS & POSSESSIONS. This lecture will concentrate firstly on Breughel in Flanders with scenes from everyday life, markets and feasts, Catholic devotions and trade with the Americas. Moving on to Holland and focusing on Vermeer and Nicolas Maes with interior scenes, domesticity and still lifes.
The gallery visit will reinforce the variety and wonder of work of the Dutch and Flemish Old Masters. Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe will bring their work to life in her inimitable style.
Arrive from 10.15am with the lecture starting at 10:30am. We will break for coffee and plan to finish by 12:30pm.
