Chantal Brotherton Ratcliffe returns to give a lecture on the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo. This may be of interest with the upcoming exhibit at the which will be on at the Royal Academy on Michelanlgo, Leonardo, Raphael and from 9 November 2024 until 19 February 2025.
Michelangelo, one of the greatest names in Art History. We use the word Genius too easily, but with Michelangelo it is truly justified. He worked with equal brilliance as painter, sculptor and architect, and his very long life (he was nearing 89 when he died in 1564) allowed him to develop and change his style in all these arts. The lecture morning will take us through his work, from the Sistine Ceiling and the David to the Sistine Last Judgement and his final most poignant sculptures. We will see how he trained as a young man in the studio of Ghirlandaio in Florence, and how the teaching he received there allowed him to stride with ambition into the challenges of working in Rome, and how his energy combined with the fluctuating fortunes of his patrons and his country create a complex and fascinating narrative.
