Surprising Shadwell – London Walks

8 April @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Emerging through Inter-War social housing leads you to a surprising selection of buildings and stories surrounding the mid-19th Century Shadwell Basin and nearby Tobacco Dock, a vast 19th century warehouse.  Early local entrepreneurs included keepers of exotic animals and rope makers and in the local churchyard a mortuary was converted into a natural history museum.  If this is not enough there is the story of the Battle of Cable Street immortalised in one of London’s most iconic murals, Wilton’s Music Hall, a post-war estate named after a 17th century Swedish visionary, the newly relocated Royal Pharmaceutical Society and brand new developments on the site of Fortress Wapping. Rachel Kolsky will lead us on this tour  jam packed with visual treats!
Meeting Point: Outside Shadwell DLR station, under the railway
