Laundresses and the Parisienne - Part 2

Laundresses were familiar figures on 19th-century Parisian streets. They featured in numerous innovative paintings by artists including Daumier and Degas as well as popular prints. Why were these female workers and their labours so appealing? And in what sense, if any, do these images reveal the severe working conditions in which these impoverished women lived and laboured?

In this second lecture Jo Rhymer will consider the Parisienne. Associated with fashion and self-fashioning, the Parisienne’s identity was not always clear-cut. While her finery might be indicative of bourgeois respectability, it was not a guarantee. A fashionably dressed Parisienne could belong instead to the demimonde world of promiscuity. Given this fascinating uncertainty, in paintings she became a signifier of the ambiguity of modern city life. What connections, if any, might there be between the Parisienne and the Parisian laundress?

The lecture is from 10:00am - 12:15pm with a break for coffee/tea. Come at 9:30am and have a chat.

In this series of five storytelling-concerts you had the chance to explore the sounds and secrets of the world’s great cultural capitals— Paris, Vienna, London and Moscow. On the 26th September we will reach the fifth capital, New York.

Internationally acclaimed virtuoso pianist and captivating storyteller Pavel Timofeyevsky delved into how these iconic cities shaped music history. From the intimate salons of Paris to the wild jazz clubs of New York, from Vienna’s cozy coffee houses to Moscow’s lavish palaces and London’s rowdy music halls, discover the stories behind the compositions and learn about their creators: how they were shaped by their times and how they continue to inspire us today. The series featured solo piano performances as well as appearances by opera singers and instrumentalists with music by Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Porter, Bernstein and many more.

Part Five: The Melting Pot – New York

New York, the city where music was reborn.
Unlike Vienna, which clung to tradition, or Moscow, where composers lived in fear, New York thrived on destruction. It shattered the old ways and built something new—louder, faster, more rebellious.

But its musical revolution wasn’t born in isolation. The city was a melting pot where European émigrés, African American jazz pioneers, and Latin American rhythms collided, reshaping the very fabric of sound.

This recital explores how New York transformed music: Gershwin moved jazz into the symphony, Bernstein blurred the lines between Broadway and the concert hall, Cage declared war on convention, and Rzewski turned music into protest. From Harlem’s swing to the avant-garde lofts of downtown, we hear the city’s restless energy, its defiance, and its vision of the future.

    Event’s Schedule:

    2:00pm – Arrival, Tea & Cakes

    2:45pm – Performance begins

The event will be held at a private member's house in Chelsea (nearest tube station Earls Court).
Please email Maria Puleio at music1@kcwc.org.uk for further info.

In this high-energy, transformative talk, breathwork expert and coach Karen Farrell flips the mindset conversation on its head and reveals a powerful truth: the real reason so many women feel stuck, anxious, or held back isn’t a lack of willpower or confidence — it’s that they’re not breathing properly.

We’ve been taught to think our way out of fear, and silence that inner critic with positive affirmations alone. But what if the real key to unlocking your potential isn’t in your head — it’s in your breath?

Through her signature 3-step framework, Karen shows you how to shift fear into fire, quiet the relentless inner chatter, and activate your most grounded, radiant, and unapologetic self. This isn’t about surface-level mindset tricks — it’s about getting to the root of your nervous system, reclaiming your breath, and using it as a tool to create real, lasting change.

Expect real talk, breakthrough moments, and a breath of fresh air — literally. You’ll walk away feeling energised, empowered, and ready to show up as the bold, brilliant woman you were born to be.

Ticket cost includes nibbles and drinks. The venue address will be communicated with registered participants nearer to the date.

If you want to learn about opera, whether you are familiar with the genre or just beginning to enjoy it, then this two-part course will offer you new ways of listening to opera, by exploring a wide variety of operas and their social and cultural contexts, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day.

The course will introduce the various elements of opera production in the first term (Part A), and will explore some of the more general ideas around opera in the second term (Part B). In each class we will take a single work as a case study, outlining some of the general history of the composer and of the background to the opera, discussing the plot, the characters, the music, and different approaches to staging.

The two courses that make up this series (Part A: 29 September - 1 December; and Part B: 12 January - 30 March) are open to all and you do not need any previous knowledge or qualifications to join the class, which will be supported by a PowerPoint presentation, plenty of audio and video examples of the operas, and many opportunities for discussion.  Following each class, the presentation and video links will be sent to participants, so you will still have the information, if you miss a class.

The tutor, Dr Bruno Bower (FHEA, FRSA), is a lively and enthusiastic tutor whose love of music is infectious. He is a musicologist, performer, composer, and music editor, as well as a highly experienced teacher. He currently teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Imperial College London. He is also the principal oboist of West London Sinfonia and the cor anglais player for Chelsea Opera Group.

Part A: Lectures will take place on the following Mondays (in 2025)

    September: 29th

    October: 6th, 13th, 20th

    November: 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th

    December: 1st

(Part B: Lectures will take place on Mondays 12 January - 30 March)

Tickets: Each course Part is payable in advance and the cost includes tea/coffee and biscuits.  You may purchase the Part A series for £180 using the instructions below.  The Part B series may be purchased for £220 on the Event page for January 12th, 2026 "Discovering Opera - Part B"

With the most extensive retrospective of her photography yet staged in the UK, Tate Britain celebrates Lee Miller as one of the 20th century's most urgent artistic voices.

First exposed to a camera by working in front of it, Miller was one of the most sought-after models of the late 1920s. She quickly stepped behind the lens, becoming a leading figure in the avant-garde scenes in New York, Paris, London and Cairo.

The exhibition will showcase Miller’s extraordinary career, from her participation in French surrealism to her fashion and war photography. Exploring her artistic collaborations, the exhibition will also shed light on lesser-known sides of her practice, such as her remarkable images of the Egyptian landscape in the 1930s.

With around 250 vintage and modern prints, including those never previously displayed, the exhibition reveals Miller's poetic vision and fearless spirit.

Determined to forge her own path, she later commented, ‘It was a matter of getting out on a damn limb and sawing it off behind you.’

The lecture is from 10:00am - 12:15pm with a break for coffee/tea. Come at 9:30am and have a chat.

We are lucky to have Cindy Polemis who is a lecturer at the Tate to come talk to us about this exhibit which will open on 2nd October 2025.

Are you baffled by Brahms? Perplexed by Prokofiev? Stumped by Strauss? On this course Bruno Bower invites you to join him on a journey to discover new ways to understand classical music, without any of the obscure jargon.

The focus of the course is on the stories music tells:

    • What kinds of stories do composers tell through music?
    • What methods do they use to tell them?
    • What kind of historical stories can we discover through music?
    • And how has historical music been shaped by the social and cultural context of the time?

Knowing who, how, and why people created, played, and listened to music makes it much easier to relate to the deeper levels of texture and structure that lie behind the sounds we hear.

The course is suitable for people with or without previous knowledge of classical music. On the course you will gain fresh perspectives on some famous works of classical music, and you will have opportunities to discover some less well-known pieces along the way.

London has a huge number of music venues, and one of the aims of the course is to give you greater confidence to enjoy classical music and to encourage you to hear classical music played live.

    What, Where, When?

    • Twenty 2-hour classes, each with a five-minute break in the middle.
    • Nine classes for Part 1 in Autumn, eleven classes for Part 2 in Spring
    • Fridays 10:30am - 12:30pm
    • Part 1: 3rd October to 12th December (no class 31st October and 7th November)
    • Part 2: 9th January to 27th March (no class 20th February)

    Catch-Up Material

Individual sessions will not be recorded, as they are intended to be interactive (they are classes, not lectures), and any recording risks inhibiting discussion. However, detailed PowerPoint slides will be circulated after every class along with a selection of YouTube links. Each session is self-contained, so it should not impact on enjoyment of the rest if you miss any.

In the spirit of supporting and discovering young talents, we will have the opportunity to spend a few hours together in a very welcoming setting, enjoying the company of members and members’ guests while listening to an unforgettable piano performance.

A delightful cream tea will be served at our tables, where we will be comfortably seated for the entire duration of the event.

We look forward to seeing many of you at 3:00 pm in a room reserved for us at Maria’s G, Coe House, 2-4 Warwick Ln, London W14 8FN

Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln are starring in this thrilling dissection of desire, loss and rebirth written by Henrik Ibsen.

Ellida lives with her husband and stepdaughters in a remote coastal town, where the sea seems to echo with the life she left behind. Once bound by a passionate promise to a mysterious sailor, she now finds herself stifled by domestic routine. When the man from her past returns, Ellida must confront the pull between the freedom of desire and the safety of the life she chose.

Simon Stone’s adaptation brings Ibsen’s psychological drama into the present, exposing the quiet devastations of compromise and the seductive danger of unfinished stories.

Before the event will be a Pre-theatre dinner at everyone’s own tab. Details and Venue will be announced closer to the event. Please indicate your interest by signing up below.

Described by the Sunday Times as 'a fascinating revelation of an adventurous and protean spirit’, this biography is the inspiration behind the 2024 film Lee, starring Kate Winslet as Lee Miller. Beautiful, bewitching and an exceptionally good photographer, Lee Miller was one of life’s adventurers. She became a Vogue cover girl in 1920s New York before embracing Paris, photography and Surrealism, and then dramatically changed her life yet again, reinventing herself as a war correspondent, notably covering the liberation of Dachau. These are but three of the many lives of Lee Miller, intimately recorded here by her son, Antony Penrose. Featuring a selection of Miller’s finest work, including portraits of her friends Picasso, Tanning and Ernst, Penrose’s tribute to his mother brings to life a uniquely talented woman and the turbulent times in which she lived.

For any queries contact event organiser Claudia Marchetti at eveningbookgroup@kcwc.org.uk

If you enjoy the book and/or this subject, you may wish to join the Photography and Art History group on a day trip to Farley House & Gallery, Lee Miller's home in East Sussex on Thursday 23 October. Check out the entry on the website.

As Diversity programmes come under scrutiny all over the world, women remain at the heart of the debate as they continue to make advances into the upper echelons of business and commerce and in social organisations. Systematic barriers do however remain, including unconscious bias, a lack of support networks, being more harshly judged than their male counterparts - all of which can result in a lack of promotion and career progression. Coaching and mentoring programmes are proving to be crucial in providing women with the guidance, resources and confidence needed to excel in their careers. Our guest speaker this month is Lara Ayoub, a strategist, trainer, coach, mentor, gender consultant, and founder of the Media Lab, a community interest organisation which focuses on the relationship between the media and the public. As a successful entrepreneur in her own right, having launched and operated five digital newsrooms, comprising three TV stations and two print publications in the Middle East, Lara has transposed the benefits of her business experience into her mentoring programme for young emerging female leaders with outstanding results and will reveal some of the secrets of her success from which we can all benefit. Lara is an Eisenhower Fellow, a Harvard Teaching Fellow, a public narrative coach with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and is the recipient of the prestigious Goldman Sachs Fortune Global Women Leaders Award. Her skills as a qualified hypnotherapist provide her with a particular empathy and insight into the well being of youth and young leaders. Lara has a special interest in human rights and recognises their importance to women all over the world.

Peter's mother is dying. Born in England and having spent most of her adult life as a doctor in Zimbabwe, she now lies on a hospital bed in the partitioned living room of his sister's London apartment, her accent having overnight become posher than the Queen's. Unsentimental, fiercely stubborn and at times hilarious, she finally drops her guard, losing all fear of conflict to become the family provocateur.

While confronting the revelations of what his family was - and wasn't - and the stoicism that sometimes threatened to destroy them, Peter also mourns the ending of his long marriage. At this point of rupture and healing, Peter reflects on his family's legacy of exile and their tenuous hold on home.

In Exit Wounds: A Story of Love, Loss and Occasional Wars, Peter Godwin considers, with both tenderness and candour, the life of émigrés, exiles and refugees, and grieves the many losses that make life both magnificent and unbearable.

He brings us into the spaces which make us question, suffer and celebrate the relationships we have among family and friends, and the healing of our own wounds.

‘Winding Your Way Down Baker Street’  London’s iconic Baker Street immortalised in song (sing the title of the walk!) was also part of the world’s first underground railway but it is also one that is rarely explored. Stories to discover include a comedian who starred in over 25 Carry On films and the man who brought Countdown to UK television while courage is never far away with commemorations for members of the WWII SOE and Norwegian resistance workers whose HQs were in this area. Crime detection is key to Baker Street … being the fictional home of two of world’s most famous fictional detectives, one has a tiny plaque while the other has a hotel, statue and museum in his honour but, curiously, there is no commemoration to the real-life lady detectives whose training school was on Baker Street.

Following on from our Art History lecture on the photography of Lee Miller by Tate lecturer Cindy Polemis (see KCWC calendar on 1st October), and inspired by the most extensive retrospective of (Lee Miller's) photography yet staged in the UK (at The Tate Britain from 3 October), we visit Farleys House.

Lee Miller, Roland Penrose and their son Antony Penrose’s Sussex home, Farleys House, became a meeting place for some of the leading figures from the world of 20th century modern art: Pablo Picasso stayed in 1950, and Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning visited from overseas whilst Eileen Agar, Kenneth Armitage, William Turnbull, John Craxton and Richard Hamilton formed the British contingent.

We will meet at Victoria station and take the train to Lewes. From there, taxis are available to take us to Farleys. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately £25.00 each way.

Please book your own return train ticket (Victoria to Lewes at 9:54am, return Lewes to Victoria at 15:55). We will share the cost of the taxi amongst ourselves on the day.

We will have a guided tour of the house, then will be free to visit the gardens and exhibitions. There is a cafe on the property where we can have lunch (your own tab) or feel free to bring your own.

Ticket cost includes tour only, all other expenditures will be at your own expense.

Please join us for this first part of a two part lecture, followed up by a visit to the National Gallery. Come to all three or as many as you can.

Bellini taught Titian. Titian taught Tintoretto. Veronese taught his sons: these are the bare facts of the Master and Apprentice system amongst the painters of Venice. But what exactly did they teach? How did the pupils learn? How today can we unpick the fascinating complexities of the workshop relationships, to discover the masters who were generous, those who were prepared to learn new material from the pupil, or the master who quarrelled with his pupils and neglected their learning?

Master and Pupil, mentor and friend, or employer and employee – the relationship between the older and younger artists at any period is fascinating. These two lectures will examine the family workshop arrangements in Venice, such as Bellini with his brother and brother- in-law Mantegna, or Tintoretto employing his daughter Marietta along with his sons. The sprawling career of Titian, with his protegee Veronese, and the unexpected career paths of Crivelli and Sebastiano del Piombo, all help build a picture of the workshop system in Venice, over the 15th and 16th centuries. And, of course, Chantal Brotherton-Radciffe, one of our favorite lecturers, will be showing images of breathtaking beauty from this, the most famous art centre in the world.

Please come at 9:30 for coffee/tea the lecture begins at 10 with a short break for more coffee/tea around 11.  We aim to finished around 12:15.

November 5th, November 12th, followed by visit to the National Gallery to see examples of these painters’ works, November 19th.

Almost 100 years ago to the day - November 8th 1925 -  the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts ( or in its original French "Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes) closed in Paris. The fair, showcasing over 15,000 exhibitors of ground breaking designs by both established artists and emerging visionaries, gave birth to the movement forever after known as Art Deco. Over 16 million people attended and justified, in their enthusiasm, the aim of the French government to highlight a new streamlined style of architecture and interiors. Furniture, textiles, glassware, ceramics and jewellery were among the many areas showcasing this emerging simple modernism of geometric lines.  An economic while still sumptuous language of beauty based on the mechanism of the machine ushered out the superfluous, floral, natural based adornments of the Art Nouveau. A new Jazz Age style was born defining an era of speed and progress.

V and A lecturer Anne Haworth will guide us on this celebratory centenary look back at an era that defined everything from the skyscraper to the teapot. Please join us for what promises to be a wonderful tribute to all things Art Deco.

You have joined us before on Tea Time Talks with the charming informative Nicholas Merchant. Whether we were jaunting through royal residences or trying tiaras, he has been our guide. Now he is going to delve into the histories of three great English architects who, over the Georgian and Victorian periods, were the Go-To Men if you wanted a Stately Home.

First we will meet Jeffry Wyatt (1766 - 1840). Nephew of the classical architect James Wyatt buried at Westminster Abbey alongside luminaries Adam and Chambers, Jeffry would earn the honour of burial at St. Georges' Chapel, Windsor for his own architectural prowess. Indeed Wyatt was allowed in 1828 by his patron King George IV to change his surname to Wyatville on his elevation to Sir in gratitude for the alterations and extensions he made to the Castle.

The awarding of that prestigious commission came after a competition among several architects including John Nash and John Soane who later withdrew his own designs. Wyatt lived at Windsor at the start of the works and remained there until his death. The great names of country houses appear throughout his long career - Belton, Bretton, Cassiobury, Chatsworth - an alphabet soup of properties. But he will forever be associated with the taste he created at Windsor.

Grab a cuppa and dream about what your own stately home might resemble. The varying styles of the architects revealed through January will give you much on which to muse.

I am delighted to be able to introduce KCWC members to Conor Deasy, a furniture restorer with the Royal Collection Trust who is offering this illustrated talk. Conor is based in the Marlborough House workshops alongside gilders, metal workers, paint restorers and other gifted craftspeople as part of a team that conserves the furniture and decorative arts from the Royal Collection. So he is perfectly suited, using interesting historical furniture, objets d'arts and excitedly some lesser known treasures from the Royal residences, to tell the story of the evolution of those interiors and how the Conservation Workshops function.

Conor is a native of Ireland where he trained in furniture conservation and restoration before relocating to the UK to work in his specialty area for John Lloyd Fine Furniture in East Sussex. Prior to his posting in Marlborough House, he worked for two years as an on-site conservator at Buckingham Palace. He has a BA Hons in History and a Diploma in Art and Decorative Arts History. He is an active member of BAFRA which is the British Antique Furniture Restorers' Association, as well as the Furniture History Association. He also belongs to the prestigious London Library and the Irish Georgian Society where I met him requesting that he speak to KCWC.

Please join us for this rare opportunity to get a peak inside how decorative arts restoration works from a specialist in the "tools of the trade" who is proudly applying his skills to the prestigious conservations rooms of the Royal Collection Trust.

Cecil Beaton – ‘The King of Vogue’ – was an extraordinary force in the 20th-century British and American creative scenes. Renowned as a fashion illustrator, Oscar-winning costume designer, social caricaturist and writer, Beaton elevated fashion and portrait photography into an art form.

Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World is the first exhibition dedicated solely to Beaton’s ground-breaking contributions to fashion and portrait photography. The exhibition will showcase Beaton at his most triumphant – from the Jazz Age and the Bright Young Things, to the high fashion brilliance of the fifties and the glittering, Oscar-winning success of My Fair Lady. Via London, Paris, New York and Hollywood, his era-defining photographs captured beauty, glamour, and star power in the interwar and early post-war eras.

For this lecture, we welcome back Anne Haworth; freelance lecturer and guide at the V&A and is an accredited lecturer for the Arts Society. She worked for the Royal Collection for 15 years, giving private tours of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace as well as exhibition lectures. She has given many Know Before You Go exhibition talks for KCWC's Antiques and Design group, including for the V&A's ground-breaking retrospective exhibitions on Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel and also for 'Shoes: Pleasure and Pain', to name just a few. Remembering the  glamour and elegance show-cased in the V&A past exhibitions on 'The Golden Age of Couture' (2007-8) and 'Horst: Photographer of Style' (2014-5), she is particularly excited about the upcoming exhibition 'Cecil Beaton's Fashionable World' at the National Portrait Gallery. Anne's lecture and powerpoint presentation will introduce the exhibition to KCWC members before their visit.

This month your cuppa for our second Tea Time Talk should be Yorkshire as Nicholas Merchant discusses the region's most famous and prolific architect. Known as John Carr of York, he was the man to whom to turn if any of the rich Yorkshiremen of the 18th century wanted a house to show off their newly acquired wealth.

Born in the county, the son of a mason, Carr was a good solid pair of hands in which to place your aspirations for a fashionable Palladian mansion. Assiduous and attentive, he was comfortable in his career, wise enough to have a good little "sideline" in also designing bridges many of these still in use today. He had the wherewithal and knowledge to only contract with the best to fulfill the costly visions of his aristocratic clients - eg. plasterwork was by the renowned Joseph Rose and furnishings often by Chippendale. Whether it was from his masterpiece Harewood House for the uber rich Lascelles or Basildon Park closer to London though built for a fellow Yorkshireman, Carr died a wealthy man in his own right with a fortune of 150,00 pounds.

Please join us to learn about this architectural titan whose stamp continues to resonate on masterful buildings.

    Catch-Up Material

Please register for this course only if you are taking/have taken the first course (Part A).  We are hoping to offer another series starting in April or September, so please do email the Activity Leader to express your interest in the first course.

If you want to learn about opera, whether you are familiar with the genre or just beginning to enjoy it, then this two-part course will offer you new ways of listening to opera, by exploring a wide variety of operas and their social and cultural contexts, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day.

In this second 11-week course (Part B), we will explore some of the more general ideas around opera. In each class we will take a single work as a case study, outlining some of the general history of the composer and of the background to the opera, discussing the plot, the characters, the music, and different approaches to staging. As per the first series (Part A), classes will be supported by a PowerPoint presentation and plenty of audio and video examples of the operas, and there will be opportunities for discussion.  Following each class, the presentation and video links will be sent to participants, so you will still have the information if you miss a class.

For our final Tea Time Talk, Nicholas Merchant will take us through a master in Victorian Gothic Revival, William Burges. Born in London in 1827, Burges' career spanned the late Georgian into High Victorian period with his death in 1881 capping a prolific number of buildings.

A critic and arbiter of Victorian taste, Burges was a student of French medieval architecture similarly promoted by Viollet le Duc. He visited the Continent during his apprenticeship to gain first hand knowledge going on to design cathedrals in France, Ireland, and Australia. But in 1864, the passionate medievalist John Patrick Crichton Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, would become Burges' most important patron commissioning him for an extensive restoration of Cardiff Castle. There Burges worked until his own death on a series of residential apartments developing an elaborate scheme of interior decoration that would set the standard for Victorian Gothic taste. Burges simultaneously adopted the style for his own home, Tower House in London, so passionate was he with the Victorian vocabulary.

Please join us to learn about this Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an Associate of the Royal Academy whose portfolio, treatises and drawings were trend setting.

Few countries in the world stimulate the five senses with as much intensity as India. The home to approximately 1.4 billion people, India is a place that defies easy descriptions. From the buzzing energy of Delhi and the abundance of crafts in Jaipur to the wonder of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India’s many regions offer larger-than-life experiences that are spectacular in very different ways. This itinerary offers ample time to explore lavish palaces, immerse yourself in the culture and see all the highlights of India’s major cities—Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur.

I have been working and traveling to India for more than 25 years and have a passion for the country, which I love to share. I have taken numerous groups of women to India with great success, and I am pleased to inform you that I have organized my next adventure for January 2026.  My travel business grew out of my desire to share the people and places I love in India.  I have established close and long-standing relationships with local restaurants, exclusive shops and wholesalers, hotels, private tour guides and local artisans and it would be my pleasure to share my discoveries. It will be an amazing experience with a spectacular itinerary, fabulous hotels, great food and the very best guides who will share their expert knowledge of the history and culture of India, past and present!

My trips are designed for small groups and are personal and intimate. Every detail from the time of arrival to departure and everything in between is handled so all you have to do is relax and create lasting memories. This adventure has been passionately designed by me. This trip of a lifetime provides an unforgettable glimpse into the local life, culture and history of "Incredible India" this magical country.

Please contact me for the itinerary, which gives details of the route, hotels, restaurants and sights, together with cost, booking and visa information. The tour will operate with a minimum of 8 people. Once you have confirmed the itinerary, a non-refundable deposit of USD 1,500.00 will need to be paid to Secrets of India, the travel company with whom I have organized our trip. Also, please let me know the person with whom you will be rooming or whether you want a room on your own, for which there will be a single supplement charge. I will then introduce you to Secrets of India, as they will need further information from you (i.e. passport details).

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any more information. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think would be interested in joining the trip.

Two of Britain's greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other - Turner in 1775, Constable in 1776 - they used landscape art as a way to reflect the changing world around them.

Raised in the gritty heart of Georgian London, Turner quickly became a rising star of the art world despite his humble beginnings. Meanwhile Constable, the son of a wealthy Suffolk merchant, was equally determined to forge his own path as an artist but faced a more arduous rise to acclaim.

Though from different worlds they shared a profound connection to nature, and both set their sights on transforming landscape painting, investing it with layers of meaning and emotion.

Marking 250 years since their births, the landmark exhibition at Tate Britain from 27/11/25 to 12/04/26 explores Turner and Constable's intertwined lives and legacies.

In two lectures David Bellingham will examine the careers of the two greatest British landscape painters.

Our guest speaker this month is the Scottish born actor and writer Neil Titley. Neil has spent his theatrical life focusing on one-man plays, in particular, a 40-year tour performing his Oscar Wilde solo performance, "Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes". The play is set in Paris in 1898, a year after Wilde's release from prison and explores his life and misfortunes with wit and irreverence. It draws on Wilde's letters, essays and anecdotes in bringing his literary genius to life. The play has been a success on five continents and won the prestigious "Best Period Piece" at the United Solo Theatre Festival in New York. Neil has written an encyclopaedia of Victorian stories entitled "The Oscar Wilde World of Gossip" and several memoirs of the great author, poet and playwright. He is an Honorary Patron of the Oscar Wilde Society. Following Neil's talk, two members of the audience will be invited to read a scene from Wilde's famous play, "The Importance of Being Earnest'. The work, celebrated for its wit and repartee parodies contemporary dramatic norms and satirises late Victorian manners staunchly upheld by the formidable Lady Bracknell.

Respected, self-made businessman Joe (Bryan Cranston) prides himself on providing for his wife and their two sons.

While wartime delivers profits for the family, it comes at a price when his partner is charged with criminal manufacturing deals, and his eldest son goes missing in action.

Peacetime brings little peace of mind as Joe’s true involvement in the activity begins to surface, and he is suddenly confronted by the consequences of his actions.

Visionary director Ivo Van Hove (A View from the Bridge, A Little Life) reunites with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Network) in this Arthur Miller classic that skewers the dishonest promise of the American Dream in this disturbingly prescient play.
