Are you baffled by Brahms? Perplexed by Prokofiev? Stumped by Strauss? On this course Bruno Bower invites you to join him on a journey to discover new ways to understand classical music, without any of the obscure jargon.

The focus of the course is on the stories music tells:

    • What kinds of stories do composers tell through music?
    • What methods do they use to tell them?
    • What kind of historical stories can we discover through music?
    • And how has historical music been shaped by the social and cultural context of the time?

Knowing who, how, and why people created, played, and listened to music makes it much easier to relate to the deeper levels of texture and structure that lie behind the sounds we hear.

The course is suitable for people with or without previous knowledge of classical music. On the course you will gain fresh perspectives on some famous works of classical music, and you will have opportunities to discover some less well-known pieces along the way.

London has a huge number of music venues, and one of the aims of the course is to give you greater confidence to enjoy classical music and to encourage you to hear classical music played live.

    What, Where, When?

    • Twenty 2-hour classes, each with a five-minute break in the middle.
    • Nine classes for Part 1 in Autumn, eleven classes for Part 2 in Spring
    • Fridays 10:30am – 12:30pm
    • Part 1: 3rd October to 5th December (no class 31st October)
    • Part 2: 9th January to 27th March (no class 20th February)

    Catch-Up Material

Individual sessions will not be recorded, as they are intended to be interactive (they are classes, not lectures), and any recording risks inhibiting discussion. However, detailed PowerPoint slides will be circulated after every class along with a selection of YouTube links. Each session is self-contained, so it should not impact on enjoyment of the rest if you miss any.

Please register for this course only if you are taking/have taken the first course (Part A).  We are hoping to offer another series starting in April or September, so please do email the Activity Leader to express your interest in the first course.

If you want to learn about opera, whether you are familiar with the genre or just beginning to enjoy it, then this two-part course will offer you new ways of listening to opera, by exploring a wide variety of operas and their social and cultural contexts, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day.

In this second 11-week course (Part B), we will explore some of the more general ideas around opera. In each class we will take a single work as a case study, outlining some of the general history of the composer and of the background to the opera, discussing the plot, the characters, the music, and different approaches to staging. As per the first series (Part A), classes will be supported by a PowerPoint presentation and plenty of audio and video examples of the operas, and there will be opportunities for discussion.  Following each class, the presentation and video links will be sent to participants, so you will still have the information if you miss a class.

The tutor, Dr Bruno Bower (FHEA, FRSA), is a lively and enthusiastic tutor whose love of music is infectious. He is a musicologist, performer, composer, and music editor, as well as a highly experienced teacher. He currently teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Imperial College London. He is also the principal oboist of West London Sinfonia and the cor anglais player for Chelsea Opera Group.

Two of Britain's greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other - Turner in 1775, Constable in 1776 - they used landscape art as a way to reflect the changing world around them.

Raised in the gritty heart of Georgian London, Turner quickly became a rising star of the art world despite his humble beginnings. Meanwhile Constable, the son of a wealthy Suffolk merchant, was equally determined to forge his own path as an artist but faced a more arduous rise to acclaim.

Though from different worlds they shared a profound connection to nature, and both set their sights on transforming landscape painting, investing it with layers of meaning and emotion.

Marking 250 years since their births, the landmark exhibition at Tate Britain from 27/11/25 to 12/04/26 explores Turner and Constable's intertwined lives and legacies.

In two lectures David Bellingham will examine the careers of the two greatest British landscape painters.

Please Note: The lecture is from 10:00am - 12:15pm with a break for coffee/tea.  Come at 9:30am and have a chat!

Graham Greene's classic exploration of love, innocence, and morality in Vietnam

"I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused," Graham Greene's narrator Fowler remarks of Alden Pyle, the eponymous "Quiet American" of what is perhaps the most controversial novel of his career.

Pyle is the brash young idealist sent out by Washington on a mysterious mission to Saigon, where the French Army struggles against the Vietminh guerrillas. As young Pyle's well-intentioned policies blunder into bloodshed, Fowler, a seasoned and cynical British reporter, finds it impossible to stand safely aside as an observer. But Fowler's motives for intervening are suspect, both to the police and himself, for Pyle has stolen Fowler's beautiful Vietnamese mistress.

First published in 1956 and twice adapted to film, The Quiet American remains a terrifying and prescient portrait of innocence at large.

Berthe Morisot (1841-95) was born into an upper-middle-class family, received formal training as an artist, and became a pioneering figure in the Impressionist movement.  Despite the limitations imposed on women of her social status, she created bold, innovative works that challenged artistic and societal conventions, capturing everyday life from a distinctly female perspective.

Suzanne Valadon's  (1865-1938) working-class mother raised her alone, requiring Suzanne to work from a young age.  After holding various jobs, including posing as an artist's model, Suzanne began creating art herself.  Unbound by social norms, she socialised in bohemian circles and developed a bold, idiosyncratic style which defied conventions.

In this session, Jo Rhymer will consider the overlaps as well as the differences between these two significant artists, both of whom made major contributions to the development of French Modern Art.

Please note: the lecture is from 10:00am - 12:15pm with a break for coffee/tea. Come at 9:30am and have a chat!

NOTE: Please do NOT unclick "include name in list of event registrants" when purchasing your ticket as you may miss important communications about this event.

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with nuanced humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first-century American literature.

KCWC Antiques and Design is delighted to announce the new date for this lecture originally scheduled almost 100 years to the day the "Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels" closed in Paris - 8 November 1925. The fair, showcasing over 15,000 exhibitors of ground breaking designs by both established artists and emerging visionaries, gave birth to the movement forever after known as Art Deco. Over 16 million people attended and justified, in their enthusiasm, the aim of the French government to highlight a new streamlined style of architecture and interiors. Furniture, textiles, glassware, ceramics and jewellery were among the many areas showcasing this emerging simple modernism of geometric lines.  An economic while still sumptuous language of beauty based on the mechanism of the machine ushered out the superfluous, floral, natural based adornments of the Art Nouveau. A new Jazz Age style was born defining an era of speed and progress.

V and A lecturer Anne Haworth will guide us on this celebratory centenary look back at an era that defined everything from the skyscraper to the teapot. Please join us for what promises to be a wonderful tribute to all things Art Deco.

A bold new creation by pianist-narrator Pavel Timofeyevsky and his colleagues.

    Not lectures.  Not concerts.

These narrated performances are an art form in themselves - where piano, voice, and story ignite to bring forgotten histories, hidden passions, and musical revolutions to life.

Pavel fuses music and narrative into living theatre, where history breathes, scandals burn, and forgotten voices sing again.  These aren't "talks with music."

They are musical stories come alive - dazzling, intimate, unforgettable.

"Queens of the Salon"  (Fourth in a 5-part Series titled "How Women Changed the Music World")

Before women ruled the stage, they ruled the room.

Salons of Paris and St. Petersburg, velvet curtains pulled back.  Piano and voice whisper their secrets: they funded, they mentored, they made empires.

Join us for an unforgettable evening as we come together to celebrate the strength, resilience, and spirit of women from around the world.

Listen to powerful, deeply human stories shared by our members -- women who have lived through apartheid, war, depression, health challenges, and the everyday obstacles shaped by government and society.  These are stories of courage, honesty, and hope.  Stories that remind us we are never alone, and that strength is often forged in life's hardest moments.

Be inspired.  Be moved. Be reminded of everything women can overcome--together.

After the talks, stay and celebrate with us over wine and delicious nibbles, enjoying conversation, laughter, and connection in a warm and welcoming space.

Inspiring stories.  Real voices.  A community that lifts each other up.

Come celebrate all of us.  Bring your daughters, mothers, and female friends--everyone is welcome.

London Design Week is a brilliant interiors event held at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, where leading fabric houses, wallpaper brands, furniture makers and lighting designers launch their latest collections - It's one of the best places to see what's new, all under one roof.

If you'd like to go, but don't fancy doing it on your own, do come along and join us.  We'll meet first, then walk around together at a relaxed pace, taking in the showrooms and new launches as we go.

Activity leader Emilia Laurie, an Interior Designer herself, will be leading the group, pointing out the pieces worth seeing, talking through what's new (and what's genuinely useful), and happily answering questions along the way - whether you're updating a room at home, planning something bigger, or simply love interiors.

We will meet on the steps of the Design Centre.

Never Mind, the first installment in Edward St. Aubyn's wonderful, wry, and profound Patrick Melrose Cycle, follows five-year-old Patrick through a single day, as the Melrose family awaits the arrival of guests.

Bright and imaginative, young Patrick struggles daily to contend with the searing cruelty of his father and the resignation of his embattled mother. But on this day he must endure an unprecedented horror—one that splits his world in two.

In Never Mind, St. Aubyn renders this vivid tragedy with profound grace and precision, and introduces us to the unforgettable, complex figure of Patrick Melrose.

June 1912 - George Fabian-Lawrence, or Stony Jack as he is better known, picks through a heavy ball of clay brought to him by two workmen from a City of London worksite.  A glint of gold attracts his attention before a pearl earring tumbles into his hand followed by a Burmese ruby then Colombian emeralds, lapis lazuli from  Afghanistan and Iranian turquoise.  The greatest single cache of Elizabethan treasure - The Cheapside Hoard - has fallen into Stony Jack's covetous lap.

Join us to learn from author Victoria Shepherd about the underbelly of the Edwardian antiques trade at the height of the Empire.  Hear how mudlarkers, charlatans and chancers unearthed treasures and ghosts in her riveting and twisting tale of adventure and intrigue.

"She Who Dares: The New Sound of Power"  (Fifth in a 5-part Series titled "How Women Changed the Music World")

She conducts.  She composes.  She doesn't ask.

The piano blazes, the voice soars -- celebrating the fearless women forging a sound world all their own.  The future is female.  The future is now.

Micaelina Wautier - a 17th century trailblazer rediscovered.

Active in Brussels in the middle of the 17th century, she challenged the limits imposed on female artists at the time by working on an unusually varied range of subjects: from flowers and portraits to grand history paintings -which was a format usually reserved for her male counterparts.

In her most famous painting, The Triumph of Bacchus, she painted herself as a pagan bacchante in monumental scale, looking squarely at the viewer and confidently asserting her position as the maker.

Although Wautier was hugely successful in her time, her breathtaking paintings and her place in art history were almost lost in the 18th century.

This exhibition is on at the Royal Academy from 27 March - 21 June 2026.

Our lecturer will be Chantal Bortherton-Radciffe.

Please come at 9:30am for a coffee/tea. The lecture begins at 10:00am and we aim to finish at 12:15pm. There will be a break around 11:00am.

Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…

Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside,
    it’s far too late.

    But I reassure myself:
the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

    They don’t know what I’m capable of…

Welcome to the London Canal Museum! Learn about the history of London's canals, about the cargoes carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats. Peer down into the unique heritage of a huge Victorian ice well used to store ice imported from Norway and brought by ship and canal boat to be stored. This unique waterways museum is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker, and features the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals.

LearnArtory has organised for us a tour which  will be in 2 parts: first, step back to Victorian times for a one hour talk about the ice trade. This includes a demonstration of ice cream-making using the replica Victorian ice cream churn; you’ll watch, take part and enjoy a small sample! Followed by a short orientation talk about the museum itself that you can visit by yourself freely. A great journey through Victorian Times!

See Baz Luhrmann's revolutionary film come to life on stage in the London West End.

The story follows Christian, an English writer, who travels to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution.  He visits the city's biggest night club, Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with its star performer and courtesan, Satine.

The Piccadilly Theatre has been transformed into a world of splendour and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory!  A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment.

A theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, and freedom and - above all - love.

NOTE: There will be an optional Pre-Theatre Dinner at your own expense. Details will be emailed from the Activity Leader closer to the event to the KCWC members who have purchased a ticket to the musical.

In 1937, artists Sir Cedric Morris and his partner, Arthur Lett-Haines, set up the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at their home Benton End in Hadleigh, Suffolk. There, alongside other celebrated art students and friends, including a very young Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Vita Sackville-West, they explored an “outside the system” approach to creativity taking inspiration from Benton End’s beautiful gardens. Cedric, also a horticulturalist, was a breeder of bearded irises naming over 90 with the Benton prefix. The gardens equally inspired many innovative designers such as Beth Chatto, the most famous of her generation.

Whether you love interiors, gardening or painting, this talk presented by Beatrice Prosser-Snelling from The Garden Museum of London, will interest you. As the project director for the restoration of the garden and house which just received National Lottery Funding, she is the ideal guide until we will have the chance later in the year to visit Benton End with BADA Friends.

"Her Music, Their Name"  (Second in a 5-part Series titled "How Women Changed the Music World)

They wrote. Men took the credit.  Now the piano shouts their truth and the voice sings their stolen songs --

Fanny Mendelssohn, Alma Mahler, Florence Price.  Forgotten no more.

Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul—the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the avant-garde of the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to actually do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter—environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man—she was doing her small part to build a better world.

But now, in the new millennium, the Berglunds have become a mystery. Why has their teenage son moved in with the aggressively Republican family next door? Why has Walter taken a job working with Big Coal? What exactly is Richard Katz—outré rocker and Walter's college best friend and rival—still doing in the picture? Most of all, what has happened to Patty? Why has the bright star of Barrier Street become "a very different kind of neighbor," an implacable Fury coming unhinged before the street's attentive eyes?

In his first novel since The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has given us an epic of contemporary love and marriage. Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom's characters as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait

ONE WOMAN, ONE BIKE AND ONE RICHLY ENTERTAINING, PERCEPTION-ALTERING JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY.

In 2015, as the Syrian War raged and the refugee crisis reached its peak, Rebecca Lowe set off on her bicycle across the Middle East. Driven by a desire to learn more about this troubled region and its relationship with the West, Lowe's 11,000-kilometre journey took her through Europe to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, the Gulf and finally to Iran.

It was an odyssey through landscapes and history that captured her heart, but also a deeply challenging cycle across mountains, deserts and repressive police states that nearly defeated her. Plagued by punctures and battling temperatures ranging from -6 to 48C, Lowe was rescued frequently by farmers and refugees, villagers and urbanites alike, and relied almost entirely on the kindness and hospitality of locals to complete this living portrait of the modern Middle East.

This is her evocative, deeply researched and often very funny account of her travels - and the people, politics and culture she encountered.

To celebrate the centenary of the birth of HM Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Collection Trust has organised at the King's Gallery the most comprehensive display of her fashion ever assembled.  200 items of the late Queen's clothing from her childhood through her decades' long reign will be on exhibit.

Preceded by a lecture, our private visit will allow you to see - without crowds - the coordinated ensembles designed to help eager onlookers spot Her Majesty on walkabouts.  Special highlights will be jewellery, her 1947 Hartnell Wedding Dress, and one of her earliest outfits worn to the 1934 wedding of the Duke of Kent.  Curator Caroline de Guiltaut explains the exhibit will "tell the story of a lifetime of thoughtful style choices - from HM's hands-on-role and understanding of the soft power behind her clothing to the exceptional craftsmanship behind each garment".

Join us for some English fizz, fashion fun, a 10% gift shop discount AND a pass for Free Gallery readmission through 16/9/2027!

NOTE: Please do NOT unclick "include name in list of event registrants" when purchasing your ticket as you may miss important communications about this event.

Executive Power and Trade Wars in a Trumpian World and their impact on Geopolitics and the Rule of Law.

Despite the many changes borne out of populist and strongmen governments, we continue to live in an interconnected world with trade policy, US Executive power and geopolitical events increasingly affecting and shaping our everyday lives. Our guest speaker this month is Rob Macaire who from positions at the highest levels of the Diplomatic and Security Services in the UK has borne witness to so many of the seminal and defining geopolitical events of the 21st century. Rob is the UK's former Ambassador to Iran and Kenya. He has held senior positions at the British Embassies in New Delhi and Bucharest and he was in Washington at the time of the terrorist attacks on the US in September 2001. He contributed to the Oslo Accords aimed at achieving a UN backed peace treaty between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. In Tehran, Rob negotiated for the release of UK detainees, he led the UK's role in multilateral nuclear talks with Iran and for a brief period he was unlawfully detained by the Iranian authorities. Farsi-trained and steeped in the region's dynamics, he offers a unique ground level perspective on risk, escalation and engagement: attributes which increasingly are in demand in international commercial risk management.

Following 9/11, Rob ran the Foreign Office's global consular services, directing crisis response for UK nationals worldwide and worked intensively on counter-terrorism as Head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Counter-Terrorism Department. He has advised two FTSE top-10 companies: BG Group and Rio Tinto on political risk, strategy and international affairs with briefings which transpose complex geopolitics into clear, actionable insight for boards and global teams.

Rob serves on the Council of Chatham House, is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Atlantic Council's Iran Strategy Project and continues to brief audiences at leading forums including an Asia House roundtable in July 2025 on Iran's regional dynamics. He is a trustee and director of The Thunderbird Project and supports life-saving drone use by emergency services. Rob is married to Alice Macaire a much admired member and former Board member of KCWC. We are honoured that Rob has agreed to address us at this month's Guest Speaker Address and he is uniquely qualified to do so.
